Yesterday saw some pretty big results at Christie's latest auction in Hong Kong. The Important Watches sale included a number of extremely rare and unique pieces from brands like Patek Philippe, Greubel Forsey, Laurent Ferrier, MB&F, Kari Voutilainen, and more. A number of these pieces either set records or came extremely close, with the sale's value totaling just shy of $20 million. Here are some highlights from the sale.
We'll start with the watch that sold for the highest final price, a Patek Philippe 5004 in platinum. The split-seconds chronograph / perpetual calendar combo is arguably one of the most appealing complication sets around and this model was replaced not so long ago by the new Ref. 5204, which comes in at a significantly higher price point. This example has a black diamond set dial, platinum case, and second case back, and sold yesterday for $609,587.
All but one of the other top-ten highest priced watches are from Patek Philippe, with the outlier being this Greubel Forsey GMT coming in at number nine with a sale price of $392,154. The three-dimensional titanium globe at 7 o'clock and tilted tourbillon at 5 o'clock make this an extremely visually impressive piece. Moving deeper into the catalog, we found this Laurent Ferrier Galet Micro-Rotor in 18k pink gold, which sold for an impressive $45,298. It's great to see a modern watch hold its value like this. We've told you before though, these aren't exactly easy to find even brand new. Sticking with something modern and pink gold, an MB&F LM1 pulled $64,712 as the very next lot on the block.
While Christie's recent Geneva sale featured a number of truly exceptional Rolexes, this sale featured far fewer, and nothing like a Ref. 4113 or Zerographe. The best of the bunch was this ref. 6263 Daytona sold by Asprey in 1985, with an Asprey-signed caseback. It commanded a price of $67,948.
